Imagination is the fire of life…

Joker. Great Villain blogathon. Villain. Dark Knight

Joker. The Dark Villain Rises.

I know what you are thinking, am I stealing one of the greatest movie names here? I most probably am. This is my entry for Great Villain Blogathon-2016, which by the way had me excited since March 2016  and thank goodness I get to make it in time for this year’s entries. I love villains, we all have that soft spot for a villain where we want to take their side, especially if you are a woman. No denying. Obviously we do not want to support or let alone something like that happen to us or the ones we love but we all love and appreciate a good villain in a movie/novel/anime etc.

First, no copies are allowed in this blogathon but I do not know if Joker has been already put up by someone in the Great Villain Blogathon  2016. I do not have enough time to search and then write since it’s already 9 PM in India and soon it will be 12 AM & I really want to write this. So I hope you can understand my sentiments.

So, who do you think is my one selection for the year?

THE  JOKER.

Simple, he is the TRUEST form of a villain. He isn’t afraid of showing up, he is very well covered and stays two in fact three steps ahead of the hero and accept defeat head on. Better plan next time. You are not defeated unless you accept it and take it to heart. After all, why so serious? Life is more fun when you have a joker around, right? Insert and evil full of sarcasm laugh from him and my statement is complete.

Give a man a mask and he will show you his true face. ~ Joker

Joker doesn’t believe in being alone, unlike other villains. He knows he needs his minions but he also knows his minions can betray him, so he finishes them himself to show the others who is the boss. Unlike others, he creates a real villains like Harvey Dent.

Harvey Dent. Dark Knight. Villain. Great Villain Blogathon

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the VILLAIN… So he said.

Well, maybe he lived too long.

He gives the man a reason to kill. He gives the fighter or rights, truth just one reason to turn into someone who would be put in the same category as the ones he fought against.

He wanted to rip people off of the very belief on which their crumbling soft system is built. He doesn’t care if someone gets hurt, he wants people to hurt, he wants people to question their inner demons, their true faces that they won’t show to anyone else. Like the final scene in the two boats. One with the prisoners and one with the civilians. Both have the right to kill the others, take their lives and save their. In those moments people showed their true colors, the tension on their faces and their actions, all of it.

Even when those people on the boats don’t push the button.

Joker says, “”You can’t rely on anyone these days. You gotta do everything yourself. It’s okay. I’m prepared.”

Batman: What did you do?

Joker: You didn’t think I’d risk losing Gotham’s soul in a fist fight with you.. No. You need an ace in the hole. Mine’s Harvey.

I took Gotham’s white knight and I brought him down to our level. It wasn’t hard… You see.. Madness is like gravity. All it takes is a little, Push… ~ Joker

In the end Joker couldn’t corrupt Batman though, his one true goal. At least that’s what I like to believe. He did say to Batman, “You truly are incorruptible” and that’s why he had to choose Harvey, Batman wouldn’t do it.. Joker did whatever he can and he did it in style.

Villains are portrayal of the demons which artists of any kind (writer, painter, graphic designer, screen writers, movie makes etc) take and turn into something that people can enjoy and marvel at. DC comics got to marvel at a wonderful villain whose true face is visible yet so difficult to grasp.

Heath Ledger is one of my favorite actors and with this movie he gave life to one of the most thought-provoking villains. Although it was his last act, it was the BEST.

Well, so that’s it. Comment and tell me what you think. 🙂 Now I’m off to read about other great villains. See you.

Update: As you can see in the comments me and Saaransh of Saranshsinghpundir has a great chat there after which he agreed excitedly to draw a sketch of Joker. And today (02/06/2016) he surprised me with this awesome sketch. Thanks so much for such a wonderful sketch Saaransh, it depicts the style and persona of Joker in all of his dark glory.

  1. I’ve taken up the task of collecting as many Joker-centric DC comics as possible. My city’s bookstores always run short of the really good stuff.

It’s my humble belief that without people like the Joker, we’d crumble. We always need that person to remind us how demented and unaware we are, and how his madness is merely superficial when compared to ours.

    • I agree. People like Joker are necessary. Our madness needs to be reminded of. Batman is incorruptible and Joker is his true opponent. Now if just people weren’t corruptible?

Wow you have Joker-centric comics collection? Awesome. I hope you find more and more of them. 🙂

  2. Ahhhh, the Joker. Well, if you’re going to do a piece on a villain, the Joker is the way to go. Good for you. I must admit though, I always like the good guys. I’m glad that Batman couldn’t be corrupted. Hahaha.
    Have a lovely weekend Hemangini.
    🙂

  3. JD

Loved it. The dark knight is one of my favorite movie and The Joker is one of the best character 😀

  4. I still regard that as a flawless film. Not too many of them around.

  5. Whoaa……. this is fabulous Hemangini …brilliantly presented, loved it to the core 🙂

  6. Very creative 😊
I look forward to reading more

  7. Hard to argue with any of that. A perfect first post of yours to read 🙂

  8. Like you, I LOVE a good villain, and this is coming from someone who does not watch much TV or watch much films at all. But Heath Ledger as The Joker has always captivated me. It’s a role he played with so much conviction. I like how villains go about their goal: they are are always planning and scheming. As you said, they are always a step ahead and usually have a few plans of attack – at least the more conniving ones do. They can be persistent, and sometimes I wish guys were that persistent with me… 😀

“he wants people to question their inner demons” Such an interesting analysis of The Joker. Sounds like he wants people to questions their weakness and bring it out in the open, and that is when he will strike to get the upper hand. Very clever 😀

    • I loved your analysis in the last paragraph! So truly Joker. Exploiting people’s weakness and in the end the person ends up feeling as if they were like that to begin with.. Harvey Dent sure didn’t feel that way but still the last scene in the boat really cracks up those people’s characters. I think those who do not watch much TV and Movies have much better views of it.

I am humbled to have you comment here. thanks so much 🙂

      • It’s a fact that we are all better at some things than others, and I think the Joker is aware of that himself. Getting others to focus on their weakness, maybe they will stop picking apart their villain and look at themselves instead. He may be a villian, but he sure is smart in getting us to reflect on how we are 🙂

  9. Well written article. Interesting. liked the ‘soft spot for villains’ part…hmm. Every hero has an element of villainism in him and vice versa… ma’am!

  10. Joker in the Dark Knight Batman series, was truly horrifying because he didn`t care. He wasn`t being evil for a reason or a purpose. He was evil and mayhem, no conscience behind any of his actions. Inhuman almost. And I agree with you, Heath Ledger was a very talented actor and Dark Knight one of his best roles. But I have a soft spot for the first time I saw him in the movies with Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You“ 🙂

    • heehee I also loved his role in 10 Things I Hate About You, a none caring teenager (but I never saw one such guy around!) lol… Joker is one of the darkest villains in fiction.
Thanks for stopping by Mandibelle :). I haven’t been online since long and couldn’t visit you.. Much appreciate it.
      Have a wonderful day 🙂

  11. Great post. Joker is one of the greatest, if not the greatest villian. This was a pleasure to read.

  12. You know of Pran in the Hindi movies, he was the pet villain of everyone and he lived for more than ninety years.
He was more popular than the Hero in many movies. He enacted some joker characters also later in his life.
    Good Post.
I have not seen you since long on my Blog.
You are Welcome, the Red Carpet is unfurled for YOU.
    Shiva

    • hahaha thank you so much. Red carpet, I am flattered! I am on my way! :p
Yep Pran, Amrish Puri and Danny were my choices to write about along with Joker but I couldn’t manage. I had to write this one in a hurry too. I feel it’s incomplete! Will blog about next year’s blogathon.

Thanks for rememberign me Shiva 🙂
      Much appreciated.
Happy Buddha Purnima to you & your family. 🙂
